I find it interesting that people can look at the same thing, but not see the same thing. These collages play with that “he saw/she saw” idea. Everything in this series, in some way or another, began with paper scraps rescued from the ‘discard pile’ of my husband’s, Michael Scotko, pastel landscape paintings. Works that don’t make the cut for him, are perfect for me to repurpose. I paint over his old paintings with encaustic wax and then cut shapes from the colors and patterns to use in my work. Where it goes after that changes depending on the moment or my mood. Many evolve and incorporate additional layers of materials like dress patterns, gauze, venetian plaster, even more wax, and oils. They evolve over weeks, months and sometimes, even years. I like exploring the liminal spaces between “his and mine”.
