My fossil paintings begin as concrete castings of items from our garden. After the concrete sets, I spread on Venetian plaster, scribe in marks and then burnish it to create a subtle and textured surface that’s ready to paint. Using oils, I scumble color on and wipe it off, over and over again until I know when to stop. It’s an evolutionary process. Each piece captures the passing of time and holds the history of touch within it.

My Recovering the Muse series has its origins in work that was once started or considered finished within the past 20 years. Much like life, the older layers, although no longer visible as they once were, have provided the evolutionary direction for what is here now. Incorporating collage, venetian plaster, grout, encaustic wax, colored pencil and oils, this body of work celebrates my past within the present.
