Rohrer Middle School is 6th through 8th grade, with enrollment around 560 students, and is adjoined to the High School. All middle school students participate in what is called an “exploratory art cycle” that meets on a rotation, 22 times during one marking period. Per student, it adds up to be about 15 hours of art instruction per year and contains experiences in a variety of media and processes.
I wrote the Middle School curriculum, “Art is Elemental” and taught it at the middle school from 2010-2014. It is inspired by environmental issues that impact our earth, water and fire/air. We addressed conservation, pollution, waste & wastefulness, recycling & upcycling and sustainability through art! There were three school-wide, year-long themes (earth, water and fire/air) that rotated annually so that by the end of their middle school experience, each grade level had them all.
